The CSR Challenge: How to Appropriately Help Entrepreneurs Near Resource Development

Concepts and a Successful Case Study

Mining companies are not equipped either with the skill set or the appropriate relationships to choose which entrepreneurs to support and how to do so. In addition, mining companies would put existing relationships at risk if they were to engage directly in these decisions.

Over the last 4 years East Africa Opportunity Corp (“EAOC”) has developed a model which may or may not be replicable, but in its situation is certainly working. The subject investee, Liberty Engineering and Construction, is owned and lead by two Alberta trained engineers working in South Sudan where the resource development relates primarily to oil. Investments by EAOC are for profit, and the subject company is now a profitable, economically sustainable, and growing enterprise which employs 35 head office staff and up to 200 – 300 labourers on various sites. EAOC has also recently backed 2 other entrepreneurs in other countries, each born in their respective countries and now with at least one foot (and family) in Alberta.

Glen Jones, Managing Director, Mining Intelligence and Mark Francis, Senior Advisor to Canadian Securities Exchange, and each directors of EAOC, will present on how this developed and what challenges had to be overcome (and remain).

In addition two other short presentations will highlight methods of supporting entrepreneurs in the developing world:

KIVA – a microlending platform which allows for distributed, individual choice in supporting micro-entrepreneurs. As Ecuador has recently improved its mining regulatory framework, CSE staff have participated in loans to Ecuadorian based microbusinesses.

Artisanal Gold Council – programs to enhance mineral, in particular gold, recoveries for formalized artisanal miners and remove mercury from these small scale mineral recovery processes. Artisanal gold mining represents perhaps the largest array of socio-environmental issues in international mining.
